Hi, my name is Michael Scarola. Today I would like to share with you the reason why I created this course. One of the main reasons why I got into drawing was because of depression. I was an introverted kid. I could never fully express myself with words, which made it hard to make any friends. When I was growing up, most kids found me weird because I remained by myself all the time. 

Because of that, I was continually picked on by the other school kids. I lived in a single-parent household with my mom, and we kept moving from one place to another because we couldn't keep up with the rent. I saw the immense stress and pressure that my mom underwent during that time. My depression grew more in-depth, but I kept it to myself to avoid adding more burden to my mother. Everything in my life felt meaningless. 

I had no form of outlet to release this built-up tension within me. At the age of 12, the only kind of comfort I ever truly had was cartoons and comic books. The stories I read and watched were things I wish I could have been apart of. They sparked imagination in me that seemed to take me away from a life I never wanted to live at that time. It was the closes thing to magic
The more I engulfed myself into those worlds, the more at peace I felt. This led me down the path of drawing. I was utterly terrible at first. I wanted to quit and give it up. But I thought to myself if I stopped, what else will fill this void in me? So week after week, I practiced. But I was still terrible. I never knew what the hell I was doing. I was basically copying and pasting everything I saw. I never fully understood the core concepts of drawing.

A few months later, I enrolled in an art club. That was one of the best decisions I made in my life. I felt like I was in a Kung Fu class. Everyone was on black belts in regards to drawing in that class. This sparked new motivation in me. The craziest thing is that most of the kids were my age! And they were drawing at an astounding skill level. Through that class, my drawing and confidence hit the roof. I was no longer depressed or seeking validation in cartoons or comics. Through those classes, I learned not only to control how I draw but how I deal with difficult situations in my life. 
So to cut a long story short, I managed to graduate college, get a degree in Character illustration at University to where I am now a freelance character designer and a teacher.
